    Using Twitter To Increase Profit In Your Pet Service (Part 1)

    Many people don’t seem to know what to make of Twitter, even those who use it! Twitter is unique in that you can’t post messages (called tweets on Twitter) longer than 140 characters at a time. What this causes you to do is create short, concise bursts of information. Celebrities have adopted Twitter in droves as a way for their fans to voyeuristically monitor their days. Just think about Charlie Sheen who recently setup a Twitter account and in under 24 hours he had more than a million followers! Why? People want to know how someone as wacky as Charlie Sheen spends his days. Celebrities will tweet about where they are at the moment, what they’re eating, whom they’re meeting and what they’re working on. Some professional athletes tweet during games to let you know how they’re feeling and what they think about what’s going on in the game. You’ve probably heard of people tweeting about and from the strangest places and that’s what Twitter has become famous for but there’s much more to Twitter than celebrity tweets. Twitter is an excellent messaging tool for businesses. Your Twitter followers can setup to have your tweets sent to their cell phones daily and think of the power of that when it comes to information. Here are a few examples of using Twitter to promote your business:

    ●    S’Nice, New York City: S’Nice is a great vegetarian sandwich shop I order from all the time. Each day S’Nice send out a tweet with their daily side salads and soup of the day. The tweet usually catches my interest to order one of the sides, soup or just gets me thinking about ordering from S’Nice in general. I especially like the tweets where they tell me about brand new items that have been added to the menu.

    ●    Food Trucks: There is a food truck craze spreading across the country. The main way food trucks broadcast to their followers is through Tvwitter. If you love a particular food truck you can follow their tweets and find out where they are parked at this very moment (example: hey everyone we’ll be sitting at Hudson and Charles until 2pm, come over and grab a sandwich, etc.) A food truck can also let their customers know about the availability of products (example: we’re running low on cupcakes guys, come on over soon if you want one, etc.) This instant connection between the food trucks and their customers gives them something a print ad never will and that’s immediacy.

    ●    Sales: Twitter is a great way to promote sales and discounts on products. Let’s say you’re someone who is always buying office supplies and you’re always looking for a deal. You might want to sign up for an office supplies Twitter feed. A company might send out a tweet “all laser toners are 40% off today” and add a direct link to their laser toner page. You click the link in the tweet and immediately can buy any toner you want for 40% off. In a world full of spam being sent to us for things we don’t want, relevant tweets are a welcome change. Relevant tweets regarding our interests in life are a stream of ideas, comments and sales for things we’re actually interested in being sent to us.

  • Using Twitter To Increase Profit In Your Pet Service (Part 2)

    I actually think Twitter is a hugely undervalued social network in the pet service industry. How is that? The pet service industry revolves around keeping your schedule as full as possible. It is also rare for a pet service to widely promote new services. Twitter helps with both of these issues. Consider the following:

    ●    Promote availability and location: Think about the food truck example above and how they let their customers know where they are, when and how much supplies they have left. Now think about a pet service or individual dog walker tweeting about where they are at the moment and if they have an open spot on their route (example: I’ll be around Washington Square Park until 12pm and I can add one 30 minute walk if you want one, etc.) Tweets like this will lead to more business and will get walks from customers who didn’t even realize a walk was available and will also gets walks from those who weren’t even thinking about getting one (example: a client is having a lazy morning on the couch watching a movie and would love to just curl up and take a nap instead of taking their dog out for a walk in the rain, etc.)  

    ●    Promote services: How do you promote a service? Especially a new service? Do you promote your services? Do your clients not even realize you offer certain services? You need to do more than just have a services page on your website saying what you offer, especially when it comes to new and/or unique services. Yes you should create a web page to promote the new or unique service but that’s just the beginning. Imagine the power of tweeting about services your clients don’t even realize you offer. Also think about how your services might be a brand new idea to a client on something they hadn’t before thought of for their pets. You’re not just promoting the obvious. You’re creating new and innovative ideas in your tweets. Here are a few example tweets a pet service might send:  

    ○    Did you know running with a dog makes them less anxious?
    ○    Have you brushed your dog lately? We can do that for you!
    ○    Sick of taking your dog to the vet to have their nails cut? We cut nails!
    ○    Our pet photography service will open in 10 days! Get one pic free on us!
    ○    Want your friends to buy you the gift of free dog walks? Now you can on our facebook page.

    *** Important: Don’t over do it with tweets pushing services to your clients. Have tweets like this be sparing but they will still be powerful.

    ●    Reminders: Twitter’s condensed messages are ripe for reminders about things going on in your business (example: a quick reminder that we’re off this Friday the 14th, please let us know if you need service, etc.) If you’re making a change in your company tweets can also be a good way to stay planted in your client’s thoughts.
