Naming the business
  • I never realized how much thought had to go into naming a business! I had decided I wanted to focus on mid-day dog walking, but someone pointed out recently that there may not be enough business to sustain a dog walking only business. They may be right- this isn't a city. So, I want to offer additional services, such as housesitting (I would prefer not to do overnights... so do I take them if offered to get business? I don't think it's a great idea to start doing something that I wouldn't continue doing... which is a another question, really.) which would include dog walks, and pooper scooper. That's my focus, right now: dog walks on a continuous basis, housesitting, and pooper scooper. Should my business name be "blah blah Dog Walking" since it's what I want to focus on? Or should it be more general like "blah blah Pet Care"? (The "blah blah" would be something like a name, or place... you get the idea.)
  • Good question! I think you should try and focus on what clients in your area are most searching for on the internet in terms of keywords, like I own nycdogrunners.com because we offer dog running and we get very specific clients for that one. But I think you should consider how people are going to find you where you live. Word of mouth or the internet or both? If it's word of mouth I'd go with the best sounding name and then still optimize your website for the internet, you can have a great sounding company name while still being number one for many keyword searches. But if you will need to rely on the internet a great deal I would definitely use a keyword rich domain name and have it be for the main requested item in your area like followed by the key word (pet sitter, dog walker, cat sitter, pooper scooper, etc.) - example: nycpetsitters.com / fairly or not keyword rich domain names do presently score higher, there are horrendous websites I know of who simply score number one because of their name. That could change as Google's algorithims change but it might be safest to have the best of both worlds, a keyword rich domain name and a very useful site for your visitors. Hope that helps!
  • With regards the horrendous website which scores #1 simply because of its name - I think I know exactly which one you are talking about, heh heh! For the life of me I can't work out how it's #1, because apart from the url matching the keyword, there's barely any SEO rich content in there at all. Sometimes I really wonder about Google's algorithm.
  • Hey Willy, ha, oh this is there a website by that name? I honestly didn't know, hadn't seen it etc (: but perfect example I guess, but I agree with you and I bet Google will change that over time!
