extreme heat
  • Where I live it gets really hot in the summers... between 95 and 105 degrees every day for about three months. The rest of the year the temperature is great- chilly in the winters, but rarely any snow. It seems just too hot to walk a dog in the heat of the summer- and it gets hot early, so even a 10am walk would be in the 90s- so what to do? Let the dog out for a bathroom break and then play with the dog indoors? Drive to a higher elevation (but that's 30-45 minutes away, and doesn't seem feasible)?
  • Hi Kitze, great question and there are so many opinions out there about how to handle a dog in the heat and how to cool down a dog who is hot, etc. Personally I base it on the breed first in terms of how much I might do in the heat and also the level of humidity. I think both for us walkers and dogs it can be a high temperature but not feel too bad, while if there's humidity it could be much worse. But taking it easy sounds like the right idea, carrying water for the dogs and check this out, we've had great success with this product for combating the heat: http://www.koolcollarstore.com/
  • Thanks, the Kool Collar is a great idea! I hadn't thought about the breed being a big factor- something else to consider.
  • Awesome glad to hear it and it works well! I had two of my walkers test it out on their own dogs last summer and we're so happy with it we will be providing every client in our company with one this coming summer (:
  • Sometimes it's not easy to do all your walks early enough to beat the heat.  I usually will do a very short walk and then spend time with the pets indoors.  Carrying water for the pets is a must in high humidity.  I also try to find walks that have plenty of shade trees if I can so we aren't out in the sun for very long.  I will also go back at a later time to let them out for a quick potty break  at their regular time if the owners wish it.
  • Great points @aahpets we've also started to use Kool Collars with all our dogs, they cool the dog's core and have had HUGE SUCCESS with them. Would suggest you all check them out.
  • Hey guys with Spring/Summer coming I have to highly recommend again that you look into Kool Collars for your dogs. Your dogs will love them, your clients will be impressed and you'll be offering a safer service.
  • Do you keep one kool collar for each dog in their homes freezers? I recommended it to my client but only few purchased it. Also, short dogs walking very close to hot pavement - not only get their paws cooked but bellies as well. So we have to be very mindful of short, hairy and short snout dogs.
  • Hi, we purchased one for every client as one of our presents of the year etc. I'm interested to see how many still have the Kool Kollars this year! If you are interested I'd order the collars early, like now, because they can run out of stock in the summer. I think it's a simple way to wow your clients and keep your dogs safe. Ask the company for their wholesale rate too and if you don't meet the minimum maybe do an order with a competitor to meet it (:
